A cross-country historic adventure

Route 66 is 100 years old this year, and the appeal remains strong

2800 miles, 18 days., 100 years of travel history. That is what is ahead of us in the month of May. Route 66 was commissioned before the US interstate system, decomissioned in 1986, and yet it remains immensely popular not just to Americans, but to many from other countries. Route 66 has created a huge sense of nostalgia with about 80% of the actual route still driveable and many historic travel artifacts still standing. It is a cultural beacon  symbolizing freedom, adventure, and mid-20th-century American nostalgia. Known as "The Mother Road," it spans from Chicago to Santa Monica, representing the quintessential American road trip, car culture, and the "American Dream". It is deeply embedded in pop culture through music, literature, and films. I have looked forward to this trip for many years, and now the opportunity has arrived.

The trip of a lifetime

Why?

After years of dreaming about it, We are finally hitting the road for an 18-day journey along Route 66—from Chicago to Santa Monica. It feels surreal to see something I’ve wanted for so long come together, and I couldn’t be more excited. As a photographer, I’m especially inspired by the chance to capture the landscapes, people, and stories that make up this iconic stretch of America. This truly feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I’m ready to take it all in—and share it along the way.

What's so special about Route 66?

In a fast-paced homegenized world Route 66 offers a reminder of a different time, a time that is  surely romanticized, based on a 20th century car culture and an ease of travel that involved piling into a car and heading off in some direction. This appeal goes beyond Americans, as many of the visitors are from foreign countries looking for that cultural symbol that we search  for when we visit the Great Wall or the Outback - it is a must-see to say you've seen America. And maybe they are right about that.

What is the plan

What is the plan

The plan is to spend 18 days on the road for this trip, previous travellers have suggested two to three weeks as a reasonable amount of time so  we are right there. No long days in the truck if they can be avoided and so far the schedule looks good that way. We have a list of things we want to see, and I have a longer list of things I would like to photograph, but I will use the mantra that you can't stop at all the things, and photograph everything, and just try to remember this needs to be  fun.
